It’s week five in the Jeffery Court Renovation Challenge and WE HAVE TILE UP! It feels so good to be at this point and finally see Jeffery Court Tile up!
Welcome back! We are sliding out of week 5 and into week 6 with TILE ON THE WALLS AND FLOOR!!! It’s been a crazy productive week! We can really start to see the vision coming together!
We still feel a bit behind, due to our sick week during week 2, but I know we will make it!!
The Jeffery Court Basalt Subway Tile is up on the wall, and it’s beautiful! I was nervous since it’s my first time to complete a large tile project. I’ve gotten my feet wet before helping a friend finish a kitchen backsplash, and I took the Jeffery Court tile class at Haven Conference this past summer.
We also leaned heavily on the experts at the Home Depot for mortar and tools recommendations. Before starting, we attended YouTube tile academy and watched a ton of videos. We wanted to make sure we did it right!
The Jeffery Court Basalt Tile is amazing quality! The tiles are the same color throughout; you can see it when they’re cut in half. We love this because we are a high foot traffic family with three kids. So hypothetically, if one of our boys was to take a gardening shovel to the tile and it chipped, you would hardly see it! That would never happen though….
One Challenge I faced was making sure the thin-set was at the right consistency. At first I mixed it too thin and the tiles were slipping. I those tiles off, cleaned the area, and mixed it again. You want your thin-set to be a peanut butter consistency.
An area I went overkill on—> I’m super type A and wanted all my grout lines PERFECTLY straight, so I taped all the tiles so the grout lines wouldn’t move. Overkill… but that’s just me!
We laid the wall tile in a modern linear pattern to keep with our modern industrial feel. No joke these tiles are heavy! Their quality shows through and through.
Being our first major tile project, we are a little slow…. It was my goal to finish all the tile this week, but we haven’t quite finished the floor yet. The floor tile is the gorgeous Basalt Hudson that lays in a parquet pattern. Then, the whole thing will be grouted with dark gray grout.
Tile is not the only thing we got done this week!
The baseboards are in, and now need primer and paint. The sink base was laid out in SolidWorks. We plan on building that tonight, and we got CEDAR! I’m so excited, you can’t beat the look of real cedar.
We also got the concrete step poured!! This was a big deal for us. We have been using the janky wood step that came with the house since we’ve lived here, and I think every member of the family has tripped on it at one time or another.
This was also our first attempt at a concrete project. It seems almost all of our home renovation projects are a first for us, but we love learning. We love pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone. Ooh and the feelings of accomplishment are so intoxicating when you step back and say, WE DID THIS!
So what’s left on the TO-DO list?
Whew, a lot… and we have one week left!!! We need to get the light fixture hung, finish tile, paint, get sink base built/installed, and stage! Do you think we’ll finish??? You will have to tune in next week and find out!!!
